App icon sizes
Two stores, two store-listing icons, two opposite transparency rules — and then the Android launcher set underneath. The numbers below come from Google and Android's own docs, and the page says which one is not machine-readable.

512 × 512 for the Google Play store listing, as a 32-bit PNG with alpha, up to 1024 KB. 1024 × 1024 for the App Store icon. Those two cover submission; the launcher sizes below are for the app itself.
Store listing icons
| Store | Size | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | 512 × 512 px | 32-bit PNG with alpha, max 1024 KB |
| App Store | 1024 × 1024 px | Square, full-bleed — Apple applies the rounded-corner mask itself |

Honest note on sourcing: the Play numbers are read directly from Play Console Help. Apple's app-icon page renders its content client-side, so it cannot be machine-read the way the others can — the 1024 × 1024 figure and the full-bleed rule are long-standing and are what Xcode enforces on submission, but treat Apple's own page as the authority if you need to quote it.
The Android launcher set
A launcher icon is specified in density-independent pixels and exported once per density bucket. Android's baseline is mdpi, 160 dpi, where 1 dp = 1 px; every other bucket is a multiple of that, following a 3:4:6:8:12:16 ratio.
| Bucket | Approx. dpi | 48 dp becomes |
|---|---|---|
| ldpi | ~120 | 36 × 36 px |
| mdpi (baseline) | ~160 | 48 × 48 px |
| hdpi | ~240 | 72 × 72 px |
| xhdpi | ~320 | 96 × 96 px |
| xxhdpi | ~480 | 144 × 144 px |
| xxxhdpi | ~640 | 192 × 192 px |

Android's guidance is to put launcher icons in mipmap-* directories rather than
drawable-*, so launchers can pick the best resolution and the icons survive
density-split builds.
Two stores, two opposite rules
Play wants a 32-bit PNG with alpha; Apple's App Store icon is a full-bleed square with the mask applied by the system, so rounding the corners yourself leaves pale fringes against the system's own rounding. The same artwork can serve both, but not the same file.
What ExportKit exports
1024, 512, 192 and 48 px PNG, plus an SVG. That covers the Play listing (512), the App Store icon (1024), xxxhdpi (192) and
the mdpi baseline (48), plus a vector you can scale to any bucket you need. They land in the zip under
icon/, named per size.
It is free to use: 1080 × 1920 Play screenshots, the icon, the feature graphic, the full
.zip and three screenshot template sets, with no watermark and no cap on exports. The rest of
the template library is a one-time licence that is not on sale yet. You can start
without an account; signing in with Google is what keeps the work between visits.
Questions
What size is a Google Play Store app icon?
512 × 512 pixels, as a 32-bit PNG with alpha, up to 1024 KB.
What size is an App Store app icon?
1024 × 1024 pixels, square and full-bleed. Apple applies the rounded-corner mask itself, so the file should not be pre-rounded.
Do I need every Android density of my launcher icon?
Not strictly, but shipping only one size means the launcher scales it, which shows. A 48 dp icon is 36, 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 px across ldpi to xxxhdpi — exporting the top few covers most devices, and an SVG lets you produce any of them later.
Should an app icon have rounded corners?
Not in the file for the App Store: Apple masks it. On Android, adaptive icons are masked by the launcher into whatever shape the device uses, so the artwork should be designed with that in mind rather than pre-shaped.
Can a Play Store icon be a JPEG?
No. Play asks for a 32-bit PNG with alpha for the store listing icon.
